  • To alert and educate members to civic responsibility
  • To encourage and promote effective and quality volunteer service in the community
  • To recognize, establish and financially support projects that fulfill a need in the community

History

Witan was founded by seven young women on July 8, 1943. Their idea was to form a group that would be a pleasure to its members while being an ever-growing asset to the community. Witan is a self sustaining, nonprofit women's service organization consisting of over 300 active, sustaining, conditional and nonresident members.

The name WITAN (pronounced wi-tahn) is derived from the Anglo-Saxon word Witenagemot, meaning a group of carefully selected leaders operating under democratic rule.

Over the years, Witan has raised funds to benefit the Greater Akron community by hosting dances, theme parties, fashion shows, cooking seminars, and by publishing two successful cookbooks.

Today, the French Market, a two-day event with juried artisans, delicious food, and a raffle with fabulous prizes, and "W.O.W.!" (Women of Witan), a gala Patron Party for the underwriters of the French Market, are the two basic fund-raising efforts by Witan.

Witan's Civic Committee screens deserving nonprofit agencies and recommends to the general membership how the proceeds from these events, often close to $50,000, should be distributed. We work diligently to balance our donations between the health, education, preservation and art projects that are submitted to us yearly.
